The North American business unit is comprised of six iron ore mines located in Michigan, Minnesota and Eastern Canada, and two coking coal mining complexes located in West Virginia and Alabama. The Asia Pacific business unit is comprised of two iron ore mining complexes in Western Australia and a 45% economic interest in a coking and thermal coal mine in Queensland, Australia. The South American business unit includes a 30% interest in the Amapá Project, an iron ore project in the state of Amapá in Brazil, as well as a number of smaller greenfield projects not yet in production.

Over recent years, Cliffs has been executing a strategy designed to achieve scale in the mining industry and focused on serving the world’s largest and fastest growing steel markets. 

Principal Functions:

Manages and coordinates activities required to ensure an accurate fixed asset system. Develops and recommends policies and procedures to govern addition / retirement / depreciation / valuation of fixed assets on both book and tax basis. 

Specific Responsibilities by Priority:

·         Assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the current fixed asset processes to streamline workflow through the system.

·         Develop, implement, and communicate process improvements made through process optimization and adaptation of technology. (Workflow, Integration with ERP systems, etc)

·         Work with global locations to centrally set up and maintain fixed asset records within company systems.

·         Participate in month-end closings by ensuring completeness and accuracy of fixed asset records. Records monthly depreciation on business unit general ledgers. Prepares monthly PP&E roll forwards. Reconciles fixed asset sub ledgers.

·         Prepare internal fixed asset reports. Develop specifications for new reports to fill unmet reporting needs and assists in the testing. Prepare and update forecasts of depreciation on both book and tax basis for various business entities.

·         Be a team member in the evaluation, recommendation, and implementation of new fixed asset system.

·         Conducts periodic inventories of all fixed assets and updates both the fixed system and general ledger to reflect the changes.

·         Ensure fixed assets are being tagged and tracked properly.

·         Monitor project expenditures of all projects to ensure that projects stay within budget.

·         Assist in the development and maintenance of ongoing end-user training in fixed asset processes.

·         Create and maintain Fixed Asset process documentation for SOX compliance.

·         Provide support to both internal and external auditors examining the fixed asset processes.

·         Answer queries from other departments and remote locations on fixed asset matters.

·         Perform other related duties / special projects as assigned. 

Education Needed:

B.S. in Accounting or equivalent. CPA or CMA desirable.  

Experience Needed:

5+ years of experience, 3 of which are in fixed assets. Experience with implementing /converting fixed asset systems and integration with ERP systems (Ellipse, SAP, Oracle). Manufacturing Exp Plus.
