In a nutshell
The SAM Analyst role is part of the Supplier Management team in the wider Business Transformation division and reports into SAM Manager.As a member of the Software Asset Management (SAM) team you’ll be supporting the day-to-day running of the team and contributing to activities to improve software asset management across the business.
The primary responsibility of the role is to control software licenses, making sure they are utilised and optimised as per agreed practices or binding contracts and that we remain legally compliant. You’ll plan, lead and co-ordinate your own area of assigned publishers while collectively making sure the team’s business as usual activity is being covered. It requires close business partnership with the Procurement, Software Deployment and Packaging, Engineering teams, and also with other departments across the business including Sainsbury’s Tech and Sainsbury’s Bank (SBAFS).
You’ll be required to navigate the complexity and challenges that come with delivering at pace and build strong relationships with colleagues within the team and across the organisation – always keeping in mind SAM principles. Enable senior stakeholders to make data driven decisions around their software investments by providing them with credible SAM analyses.
What I am accountable for
- Respond and resolve licensing queries from colleagues across the Sainsbury’s group.
- Create and maintain licence entitlement records and associated data sets, ensuring it’s kept accurate and up to date.
- Provide credible SAM analysis to senior stakeholders to enable them to make data driven decisions around their software investments.
- Create ELPs (Effective License Positions) for the software vendors you’re accountable for
- Be a subject matter expert on the publishers you’re allocated
- Investigate exceptions and errors generated by SAM tools and automated processes, working collaboratively with colleagues (where required) to address them.
- Provide accurate, qualified data and information to other teams e.g. procurement, supplier management etc.
- You’ll partner with business and tech teams and key stakeholders to support the delivery of complex projects that have an impact on software.
- Work with and advise our Sainsbury’s Tech colleagues on their programmes of work as required i.e. Windows 10.
- Set objectives and contribute towards strategic development plans, whilst ensuring team objectives are understood and met.
- Support the identification and implementation of SAM initiatives
- Maintain a customer and retail focused lens, throughout decision making processes.
- Support and guide junior members of the team and SAM admins in their queries
- Accountable for ongoing and continuous commitment to personal and professional development by maintaining a personal development plan, regularly seeking and providing feedback and supporting other colleagues in their personal development, sharing knowledge and coaching where required
- Liaise regularly with Subject Matter Experts to maximise knowledge.

- Ability to analyse large data sets and apply repeatable methods to process the data ready for consumption.

- Good commercial knowledge, always looking to deliver the best outcome for Sainsbury’s colleagues, customers and shareholders
- Strong attention to detail and be able to decipher contractual text and correctly determine how it applies to Sainsbury’s.
Effective communicator - understands the importance of and can build a strong network around the business.
Business and commercial acumen and strong analytical capability to generate, manipulate & interrogate data to perform accurate root cause analysis and generate insights & trends
- Familiarity with ITIL practices
- Certified ITIL4 Foundation
- Software Asset Management Fundamentals or equivalent
- Knowledge of common software publisher licensing frameworks i.e. Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, VMware.
- Proficiency and experience with one License Management tool on the market (examples: USU Aspera, ServiceNow SAMPro, Flexera, Snow)
